CHAPTER TEN
Luke shook Gus awake and herded him toward the bathroom, then went to fix his breakfast. He had waited a while to wake him, having lingered over another cup of coffee on the porch after Rachel had left to go to work.
They had woken late, having spent the previous day fishing and swimming then watching Brigade until late the night before After making love for a good long time it was actually closer to morning before either of them finally got to sleep. He had fixed her a quick breakfast and coffee while she showered, then got her off to work in a rush.
âOk, buddy,â Luke told Gus when he stumbled into the kitchen still rubbing sleep from his eyes. âLetâs get you fed and dressed. Canât do any field work today because of all of the rain. Cattle are all good where theyâre at, so I think it might be a good day to see about a dog.â
Gus was excited to hear it.
âYeah, and we jusâ can get my dog then!â he exclaimed as he hopped excitedly while he reached for Luke to pick him up.
He chuckled and hugged him and kissed his cheek before he sat him at the bar in front of a bowl of cereal, some milk, and orange juice.
âYou bet!â he told him and tousled his hair. âIâm going to call the shelter as soon as it opens so we need to be ready to get on down there.â
âDown where?â Gus asked.
âTo Sioux City! Thatâs where the animal shelterâs at.â
Gus nodded enthusiastically and got busy eating his cereal.
âWhat kind of dog you think youâd like?â
Gus shrugged and said, âA puppy dog. I only jusâ want to name it Chase.â
âIs that from Paw Patrol? The little police dog?â
He nodded.
âThatâs a good name for a pup, buddy,â Luke told him. âI think itâs going to be perfect.â
Gus beamed.
âOk, get your breakfast all eat then weâll get you dressed.â
âLooks like a Chase to me,â Luke told Gus after he got him sat up into the passenger seat of the truck and handed him his new puppy.
Gus held him tight, rubbing his cheek against the little dogâs fur.
âGuess we better go by Wal-Mart before we go home and get him a dish and some toys and stuff. Want to show him to your mom?â
âYeah, and can we get him a bone?â
Luke laughed. âYeah, for sure! Every pupâs gotta have a bone.â
Gus nodded his agreement.
âHe looks like heâs got some lab in himâand maybe some border collie,â Luke told him. âLooks like heâll make a really good farm dog.â
âAnd he can protect us, too. If bad manâs come to our house Chase will jusâ chase them away!â Gus said emphatically.
âYou bet he will!â Luke agreed wholeheartedly. âGoing to be the best protector there ever was!â
âNow he jusâ wants to look outside,â Gus said when Chase got high enough to press his nose against the truckâs passenger window. âHeâs jusâ looking for bad manâs.â
Luke smiled.
âDaddy?â
âWhat honey?â
âThank you for to get me my puppy.
